InterContinental Hanoi Westlake
Where is it? The InterContinental Hanoi Westlake is a 15-minute commute north of the city centre and a 45-minute drive south of Noi Bai International Airport.
What can you expect? A swish 359-room property consisting of a five-floor main block and conference, leisure and dining facilities on the lake shore, with wooden pontoons to suites on stilts over the water.
What are the rooms like? Comfy and roomy - at least 43 square metres, the hotel says. You get a mega plasma-screen television opposite a bed that is restfully sumptuous. Crisp linen and thoughtful lighting remind you that you are in an InterContinental; a mix of local fabrics, artwork, dark-wood furniture and the glint of tribal brassware are lavish hints of Vietnam.
Is there anywhere to eat? Saigon, the hotel's main eatery, features contemporary Asian design and inspiring views of the city skyline; Caf? du Lac almost recreates the informality of a French brasserie; Milan offers Italian food; the torch-lit Sunset Bar offers lakeside sunset views; and the Diplomat Lounge is a quiet place for drinks, until the resident pianist keys up her rather lonely, lobby-lounge kerplunk.
What's the bottom line? It's a fine weekend getaway and probably the best place for business travellers in Hanoi. Lakefront suites start from US$288 per night and include breakfast, butler service, internet connections and evening cocktails.
