The rock chic look is an 'it' trend this season, with New York designer Alexander Wang and Balmain's Christophe Decarnin dedicating their spring collections to rock'n'roll with stonewashed jeans, glittering body-con dresses and crystal-studded jackets. This means the rock chick of 2009 is cooler and edgier than in seasons past.
I immediately spotted Karen (right), thanks to her Balmain-style bleached skinny jeans worn with a Victorian-inspired lace embroidered top. To complete her look, she is wearing leather cut-out sandals that are cool, comfy and versatile. What takes the look to rock-star status, though, are accessories such as a studded leather bracelet and a chunky chain necklace. By combining a feminine fabric like lace with masculine items such as ripped jeans, she has made the rock chick look her own.
Pasqualina (far right), however, doesn't rely on accessories to create a rocker style. I love her flowing black sleeveless top - it's worn loose but has an interesting drape detail at the side. What really makes her outfit are her black and white leggings, which feature an abstract print. They transform what would be a mundane top into a rocking look. Her bondage-style leather sandals are bang on trend with their strategic cut-outs and metal buckles.
Since the 1980s are big this season, don't be afraid to incorporate a few sequinned items for a more glamorous take on the rock star look. Rocker style is not just about skull prints or band tees. Mix in feminine items such as Karen's lace top or wear a sleek black maxi dress with a sequinned bolero ? la Kate Moss. Goth-inspired cuffs and rings are must-have accessories to finish off the look. Go for statement pieces such as punk-style studded jewellery, leather bracelets and gold rings. Chunky heels and a pair of aviator shades are also useful.
Japanese brand Hysteric Glamour (Shop 311, Ocean Terminal, Harbour City, 3-27 Canton Road, TST, tel: 2110 1119 ) has a cool selection of tank tops and T-shirts featuring rock bands, as well as a pair of splattered jeans with bronze studs. I also saw a pair of leather and cotton leggings at Izzue collection (LG1-38, Festival Walk, 80 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong, tel: 2265 7955). Top them off with a cool denim biker jacket from Cabane de Zucca (Paterson Street, Causeway Bay, tel: 2504 5216).
