Infected Mushroom

Hitec May 27, 9pm

Whatever you think of trance music - and of all the electronic music genres it seems to have the most detractors - there's no denying Israeli duo Infected Mushroom have hit the big time.

Since starting out in Haifa more than 10 years ago, Erez Eisen and Amit Duvdevani have gone from spinning at small parties on the beaches of Goa, India, to some of the biggest festivals and stadiums around the world where they hold court as the kings of psy-trance - the harder, throbbing, psychedelic subgenre of trance music.

They've developed huge crossover appeal by adding a range of live musicians to their stage shows during the past few years, and the whole spectacle will be coming to Hong Kong next week for a party celebrating the launch of DJ Magazine's China edition.

Duvdevani (above right, with Eisen) explains the evolution of Infected Mushroom: 'It used to be only me and Erez in a DJ booth, but we got bored so we added guitars. Eventually we got bored again so we added drums. Now our performance is 99.9 per cent live.

'While our style is still psy-trance ... we have incorporated many elements of rock, and the combination creates a unique sound that we are becoming popular for.'

Just don't call them ambassadors of psy-trance. 'There are many people who have contributed to the progression of the genre. We just like to think of ourselves as musicians - we make all types of music, including rock,' says Duvdevani.

Hong Kong night owls will see the duo at their creative peak next week as they are promoting their latest album which includes some unlikely collaborators such as Jonathan Davis from Korn and Perry Ferrell from Jane's Addiction.

Duvdevani admits he never imagined getting this far while playing in the sand in Goa. 'We have played at shows like the Ottawa Blues Festival in Canada and Monegros Desert Festival in Spain,' he says.

'People around the world who are into their own types of music still find their way to an Infected show because they know it's something unique, it's an evolved expression of psychedelic music. Where can our music go from here? Forward, simply forward.'
