Putting a finger on the pulse of Chinese medicine
Checking the rhythm of pulses and examining the colour of tongues were just a couple of the health techniques parents and children learned at a Chinese medicine playgroup this week.
A parent-child playgroup at Dr and Mrs Hung Hin Shiu Museum of Chinese Medicine at Hong Kong Baptist University was organised last weekend to increase awareness of Chinese medicine.
The event was also aimed at providing the public with a chance to experience how Chinese medicine practitioners made diagnoses.
About 120 parents and pupils turned up to listen to advice about how to maintain health through Chinese medicine. There were also interactive elements, including a simulation of how to make a diagnosis by pulse and inspecting the tongue, and a general introduction to the curative effects of Chinese medicine.
Programmes were conducted in Cantonese and Putonghua.
The event tied in with International Museum Day 2009 on Monday to raise public awareness about the roles and functions of museums in society. The Chinese medicine museum at Baptist University opened in December 2007.
