Clear path for fresh graduates
MassMutual Asia has opened its doors to fresh graduates thinking about building a career in the financial planning industry. It has been taking on board up to 40 graduates a month during peak times since 2005.
'We set up a risk and management division back in 2005 to attract university graduates to join us as financial planning consultants,' said Jeanne Sau, senior vice-president of marketing support for MassMutual Asia.
The company is offering fresh graduates a clear career path and is promising a bright future for those who stay with the company.
'I think this is a great career for university graduates to consider,' said Ms Sau, who has been with the company for more than 15 years.
While academic background is always important, MassMutual Asia is looking for people with the right personality rather than what they studied at university.
'[Candidates] need to have a rather outgoing personality with good interpersonal skills, and if they have an entrepreneur mentality, that would be great because, at the end of the day, we want them to move up to a self-management level,' she said.
Candidates can progress from junior manager to senior manager and can expect to be leading a team of at least 2-5 consultants within a year.
'We have a university graduate who joined us and he is a brilliant guy and, within one year, he already has [more than] 15 consultants in his team,' Ms Sau said.
'I would say it very much depends on the person's ability and willingness.'
Selected graduates will undergo basic training for about three weeks, learning about insurance, financial planning and so on.
The training period will last one year and, during this time, the newcomers will have an experienced supervisor to act as their mentor.
Ms Sau points to several reasons why graduates should join MassMutual Asia. It has a company culture, a strong support platform, and the opportunity to work with specialised products.
'We have a lot of very competitive and specialised products that other companies don't offer, such as a guaranteed accepted insurance for those who have already contracted illnesses like cancer,' she said.
Furthermore, the company is offering the right person a team of young, energetic people who are always willing to share their knowledge and expertise, while constantly providing platforms for consultants to build relationships with their clients.
One such example was a health seminar conducted by a Chinese doctor on how to protect yourself from swine flu. 'There are these kinds of value-added service for clients and consultant relationship building,' Ms Sau said.
Although MassMutual Asia has only been in Hong Kong for 15 years, its parent, MassMutual Financial Group, carries a long heritage of more than 150 years, bearing a triple-A rating.
