Cream of city's coffee makers to join barista contest
with Andrew Sun. Additional reporting by Clara Mak and Vivian Chen.
Forget bars and cocktails, this is the age of baristas and coffees. Just how seriously do people take their cup of java now?
In July, Hong Kong will present its own Grand Barista Championship. Organised by Australian company Danes Gourmet Coffee, it will have eight preliminary heats early in the month and a grand showdown for the eight finalists on July 18.
Each contestant will be required to produce four black coffees, four milk coffees and four lattes with an identical design on the foam, all within 12 minutes. They will be assessed by two technical judges and three sensory judges for taste, presentation, technique and service. The winner will represent Hong Kong in a regional final in Sydney in August. The winner of that will go to Milan. The contest will take place at Glory Coffee, unit A, 14/F, Good Luck Industrial Building, 105 How Ming Street, Kwun Tong. If you think you have a way with beans and brew, registration is open until June 13. To sign up, go to the website www.grandbarista.com or email firstname.lastname@example.org. There is a HK$500 entry fee.
