Teenagers zoom in on big issues

Rebecca Tsui

Teenagers have been expressing their views on current affairs with their own video clips on Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) programme Headliner.

Young people made short videos on various topics - a drug scandal involving young local singers, the Sichuan earthquake, Macau immigration refusing entry to Hongkongers and Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy.

They also edited soundtracks to accompany the clips.

'This year is the 20th anniversary of Headliner,' said RTHK executive producer Doris Wong.

'Adding songs in to video clips to bring out messages about current issues is the goal of our programme. We find that teenagers are interested in making short videos and are happy to provide a platform for them to have a try.'

Hong Kong Shue Yan University second-year student Sonki Sheung On-ki used a song by Jordon Chan Siu-chun to show veteran activist 'Long Hair' Leung Kwok-hung and his counterparts attempting to enter Macau, even though they knew they would be blocked by the territory's immigration department.

'I've been watching Headliner for a long time. It's a great programme. Before I studied journalism, I only found it fun. However, after I entered university, I find the producers of the programme are really great. It's really hard to match the songs well to the issue,' she said.

Lau Tsz-kit and Li Koon-lam, Form Four students at The Church of Christ in China Mong Man Wai College, made a music video about the Hong Kong singers' drug scandal.

'The most difficult part is combining the song and the video clips,' said 15-year-old Koon-lam.

Tsz-kit added: 'Headliner can simplify complicated political issues to make the general public understand. Moreover, it is more interesting that way.

'It was a great experience and, if there is chance, I would like to make more music videos.'

Headliner is broadcast on TVB Jade every Friday at 7pm.
