'Slumdog' child stars have fund-raising roles in Hong Kong

It's just as well that they get to travel around the world for publicity stunts because their Indian slum neighbourhood was bulldozed earlier this month. The three main child stars from the hit movie Slumdog Millionaire - from left, Rubina Ali (who played the young Latika), Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail (the young Salim) and Ayush Mahesh Khedekar (the young Jamal) - are in Hong Kong this weekend to assist the Community Chest in generating some fund-raising buzz.
Only a few weeks ago, Rubina's family shanty hut was demolished, while Azharuddin's was spared from flattening only because it was known he was in the Oscar-winning film. So it must be a surreal existence for the kids, who no doubt will be put up in fancy hotels here but are practically homeless in Mumbai.
The three young Indian children will be attending public events for the Community Chest on Sunday at the Maritime Square mall in Tsing Yi at 1pm, and then appearing at the Elements ice rink at 4.30pm. Yes, they will get to try ice skating for the very first time.
Accompanying them will be child dancers doing Indian folk and Bollywood dancing. The three performers will also together sing the closing song from Slumdog Millionaire, Jai Ho.
