Many couples still observe the age-old custom of exchanging bride and groom gifts the day before the wedding. While these gifts can come in all shapes and forms, there are still some who prefer to keep it traditional with valuable items such as watches and jewellery.
The tradition of giving gifts before or even on the day of the wedding is common in many cultures, but some say that the custom has been practised less in recent years.
'The tradition is less common now in Hong Kong compared to the past. The younger generation is more interested in a simple and contemporary wedding ceremony,' said Joyce Tong, assistant marketing manager at Mikimoto.
'However, I feel that with a greater understanding of the meaning and symbolism behind the practice, more people will be willing to shop for expensive and symbolic gifts.'
For those who believe that exchanging gifts is antiquated, Arnaud Bastien, general manager of Graff Hong Kong and Greater China, begs to differ.
'This practice is not at all outdated. There might be an evolution in the type of product offered, but the tradition is still there,' he said. 'It's part of the whole engagement and wedding experience.'
