Well-known dissident arrested
Prominent dissident Liu Xiaobo, one of the most vocal advocates of political reform on the mainland, was officially arrested on suspicion of inciting subversion. Mr Liu was arrested on Tuesday, more than six months after police took him away a day before the release of Charter 08 on December 9 last year.
Charter 08 is a plan Mr Lui and others wrote, which calls for sweeping political reform and an end to one-party rule in the country. Despite the clampdown on Charter 08, the document has attracted thousands of signatures from intellectuals and artists to factory workers.
