The Champion Griffin award is rarely straightforward - if for no other reason than moving the goal posts, sidelines and even grandstands.

In some years, only horses who have contested griffin races are eligible, but this season all unraced two- or three-year-olds are included, throwing the net wider.

California Moon, Elite Sixty Six and One Wee Acorn are the nominated horses, along with a late-entry proviso for the Juvenile Sprint winner today, which might open the door at the last minute for Tony Millard-trained Royal Flush or Andy Leung Ting-wah's Flying Supreme.

What is sure is that the past Champion Griffin award winners have been horses to follow subsequently, with Silent Witness, Floral Pegasus and Joy And Fun landing the 'junior' award, before going on to careers as top flight performers. Silent Witness and Good Ba Ba even graduated to fully fledged Horse of the Year champions.
