Chou denies awards snub

Mando-pop king Jay Chou Chieh-lun denied calling the Golden Melody Awards unfair.

Chou had been nominated regularly at the awards, Taiwan's equivalent to the Grammys, but had yet to be named best Mandarin male singer, despite his enormous popularity in many Asian cities.

This year, despite nominations in eight categories, the singer didn't attend last Saturday's ceremony, instead choosing to perform on the mainland. He was reported to have said: 'If they still give me an award in my absence, it would prove that the awards are fair.'

In the end, Chou (right) was named best Mandarin male singer and won the awards for song of the year and best music video.

At a press conference this week, Chou said he felt 'incredible' about winning. 'I never thought I would win the best Mandarin male singer award. I know my vocals need work,' he said. 'Now there is only one award left that I haven't won, and that is the best lyricist award.'

Next year's Golden Melody Awards will take place on June 26. When asked if he would attend, Chou said: 'Sure, I will definitely go next year. I have to clarify that I didn't deliberately avoid the awards ceremony, but when I noticed the date of the show, I realised I had another commitment elsewhere. And I never said the awards were unfair,' he said.

'To me, being a true winner is being able to win the hearts of my fans, family and friends with my songs.'
