Who started it? Born in London and raised in the English county of Oxfordshire, Alice Maud began her career in fashion at the age of 17, when she worked as an assistant to designer Stephen Burrows. After working with stylist Philip Bloch in Los Angeles, she returned to London and studied fashion history at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Maud joined Burberry in London as a visual merchandiser upon graduation. In 2007, she started her own line of handbags and then a jewellery line called 'Alice'.

Why we love it: Maud's bags are sophisticated, sexy and feminine, with a quirky twist. Made by hand, styles feature contrasting textures, bold colours and rich leathers on luxurious, functional pieces. The signature combination of black against red appears throughout the collection while details such as tinted lining and unusual hardware add to the nostalgic feel. She cites old films such as Casablanca and Blue Velvet as her inspiration.

What we'd pick: the red doctor bag (GBP350/HK$4,400) made from painted pigskin, the single pocket lunch bag (above, GBP336) in patent cream pigskin and the patchwork clutch (left, GBP168) with a removable chain.
