A Shenzhen construction worker is missing and another seriously injured after a section of railway tunnel under a dormitory collapsed following Typhoon Molave.

The search continues for Li Bo, a 22-year-old carpenter from Sichuan who had started working on the project on Saturday. Rescuers do not expect to find him alive.

Another worker from Sichuan, in his 40s, climbed out of the wreckage soon after the collapse on Sunday and was taken to hospital with serious head and body injuries.

The accident happened at 8.30am just after the storm had blown through Baoan district. Most workers had already left the dormitory, and roommates said Mr Li had no chance to escape. According to witnesses, the two-storey structure plunged into a hole that was 17 metres deep and 40 square metres in area.

An initial investigation found that torrential rain had caused the collapse, which was the second deadly accident on an underground railway construction site in Shenzhen in the past two weeks.

Earlier this month, two workers were poisoned by toxic gas in Luohu district. There have also been frequent cases of subsidence during the work on Shenzhen's five rail lines.
