Magnetic Soul 4th Anniversary
Sat, 10.30pm, Backstage Live
Drum 'n' bass event promoters Magnetic Soul celebrate their fourth anniversary tomorrow night with the Hong Kong debut of genre icons Total Science and MC Riya (above).
Magnetic Soul have held 86 events at 25 venues in Hong Kong, reflecting the nomadic nature of the local niche dance scene as venues open, close or prove unsuitable for the kind of all night dance mayhem junglists love.
Their roster of international guest DJs has made their events the city's No 1 drum 'n' bass nights, including luminaries such as DJ Fresh, Marcus Intalex and Doc Scott, A-Sides, Suv and Fabio. They've also helped boost the scene regionally by inviting DJs and MCs from Kuala Lumpur to Perth and by taking the show to the mainland, Thailand and Indonesia.
'I started the nights because there was nothing else for drum 'n' bass heads besides a monthly night at Yumla. There's a small core at the centre of the scene, but we ran into people all the time who didn't know what we were doing so they came along,' says event founder David 'Cookie' Killingsworth. 'The feedback from the international DJs is really positive; people are really into it. We get adventurous guest DJs who think coming to play in Asia is really exotic.'
Their latest headliners, Total Science duo Paul Smith and Jason Greenhalgh, have dropped four monster albums and a few dance floor anthems, not least Champion Sound, in their 17 years in the business. Since first meeting in Oxford, England, in 1987, through a love of hip hop they've gone on to release 370 tracks on major labels.
