Shopping
The streets of Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui are well known for factory outlet shops where brand-name clothing can be picked up at a fraction of the cost at the US and European stores where they were destined. Such was the popularity of factory outlet goods that Citygate mall was opened in Tung Chung on the northern tip of Lantau Island, but accessible from the New Territories via MTR or bus. Sha Tin New Town Plaza is arguably the New Territories' plushest mall and exit barriers at Sha Tin MTR bring shoppers straight into the mall and a host of local and international stores. Further west is Discovery Park in Tsuen Wan which links to the MTR and residential and commercial buildings by walkway.
Wine & dine
Sha Tin's three main hotels - the Royal Park, The Hyatt and Regal Riverside - feature Western, Chinese and Japanese restaurants, while the new town has a floating restaurant on the Shing Mun River. In New Territories West is Harbour Plaza Resort City in Tin Shui Wai and a host of Chinese, Thai and South Asian restaurants on the Gold Coast between Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun. Seafood connoisseurs can head to Sai Kung for its seafront restaurants and Mediterranean-style eateries.
Recreation
Watersports abound in Sai Kung and along the Gold Coast. The hills of the New Territories offer ample hiking opportunities with access to the Wilson and MacLehose trails.
Local interest
Walled clan villages in Fanling and Sha Tin give an insight into New Territories heritage while some hiking trails feature defence remnants from the second world war. The Wetland Park in Tin Shui Wai and Mai Po Marshes are a delight for birdwatchers.
Getting about
The MTR continues to expand its network to provide fast train links to Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. Bus routes serve the main population areas.
