Needless (Anime)

New anime Needless is set in a future where super-powered mutants roam the wastelands of a post-apocalyptic Tokyo.

The show is based on a manga by Kami Imai, whose previous work includes Katatsumuri-chan and Shirasuna Mura. The manga has been serialised since 2004 and is currently published in Sheisha's Ultra Jump magazine. Anime production is by Madhouse, whose long list of credits includes Black Lagoon, Death Note and Nana.

It's 2130, in the aftermath of the third world war. A large area of Tokyo, where a missile exploded, has been quarantined due to pollution. The area is called 'Black Spot' and is surrounded by a wall.

But despite the barricade, the homeless and the poor settle there. And after 50 years, some of the descendants of the Black Spot settlers have gained incredible super powers. These individuals are known as the Needless.

A corporation called Simeon has taken control of Black Spot, and is conducting experiments on the residents. A resistance group attacks their Black Spot headquarters, but the move is crushed by four Needless working for the company.

One of the resistance group, a young man called Cruz, is cornered by an android. Just as the robot is about to strike, Cruz is rescued by a young, muscle-bound priest.

The show launched in Japan on July 2 and is slated to run for 13 episodes.

It's not due out in Hong Kong for a while, but keep an eye out on Animax if you want to find out what the priest has to do with anything and what nefarious schemes Simeon is planning.
