Tsumori's showing overcomes a slow start to finish on a colourful note

Japanese fashion designer Tsumori Chisato's autumn show at the JW Marriott last Thursday was a bit late getting started due to the make-up. Only, the models weren't being prepared backstage. It was a shared event with cosmetics label Shu Uemura, and the pre-show consisted of a demonstration that went on longer than expected.
After almost 10 minutes were spent on one model, the audience began to get restless when the beauty expert brought out a second girl for another demonstration. By then, some guests had stopped paying attention and started chatting. The noise volume increased to an almost embarrassing level. Even Tsumori was seen talking to IT's boss, Sham Kar-wai, sitting next to her.
Tsumori is known for her 'kawaii' cute looks, and the new clothes were typically colourful, with lots of star and kitty prints. Perhaps she was too distracted by the fray, as Tsumori almost forgot to go up on stage for the final? while guests applauded the collection. After a quick prod from a rep, she hurried on-stage somewhat awkwardly.
But at least one famous face in the front row enjoyed the spectacle. Local rocker Candy Lo Hau-yam counts herself as one of Tsumori's big fans. 'I began to take note of her designs about eight years ago,' said Lo, who is known more for her goth and tattoo style.
'Sometimes you do need to have some colourful clothes to brighten up your wardrobe. I love Tsumori designs. She uses a lot of prints and colour, so you feel like spring even in her winter knits. It also makes me feel much younger,' the 34-year-old said.
