The Editor's Note

Not long ago I sat with friends in a classic Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow from 1978 as the sun rose over the Mediterranean. We had been to a glorious party and now, parked on a beach, we were quiet, at peace with the dawn. If the beauty of the moment had been captured in a poem then the car would have featured in at least half of the verses. The sunlight made the walnut dashboard shimmer and, when one of us moved, the leather creaked in time with the waves. All modes of transportation are utilitarian at heart but they can have moments of beauty, occasions when the machine transcends its essence and becomes an aesthetic triumph. In this edition of Style we honour some of the cars, yachts and planes that have reached beyond the mundane process of getting from A to B in ways that make our hearts beat faster. On its 50th anniversary, we honour the Mini, we test Ferrari against Lamborghini and we wish Audi a happy 100th birthday. And we see what happens when cutting-edge fashion meets state-of-the-art automotive engineering. And to make your travels more delightful there's a rich selection of products that look good wherever machines go fast. Everybody should sit in a grand car, a great yacht or a stunning jet and watch the sun rise. Trust me, it's why the Gods gave us the internal combustion engine.
