An outbreak of algae in a reservoir in Hubei province affected the drinking water of 15,000 people, local authorities said yesterday.

The massive algal bloom was reported in Shiziling reservoir, a major drinking-water source in Wenan county, Zhijiang city. The fast-growing algae made the water green and smelly, Xinhua said.

It attributed the immediate cause of the algal bloom to hot and humid weather. But environmental-protection and health officials also found evidence of excessive chemical pollutants in the water.

Xinhua did not detail the extent of the outbreak. Wenan's water company cut supply and warned local residents not to drink tap water. That will leave 15,000 locals relying on bottled water in the coming days.
