College to sue magazine over allegations linked to mainland operations, finances

The Christian Zheng Sheng Association will launch a legal battle against Next Magazine for its cover story in this week's issue concerning the group's mainland operations and its financial sources.

Alman Chan Siu-cheuk, principal of the Christian Zheng Sheng College, denied the claims made in the report.

'We have already had meetings with our lawyers and will sue the magazine for the false accusations made in the report,' Mr Chan said. 'That is all I can say at the moment, as our lawyers have advised us not to make further comments.'

Established in 1985, the association operates the college, which is a rehabilitation school for young drug abusers in Ha Keng, Lantau Island.

Apart from the association's business operation on the mainland, the article also raised concerns about the drug-rehabilitation college's sources of financing and its budgets.

Speaking to the South China Morning Post in June, Mr Chan said the school had to submit audited budget reports to the Social Welfare Department every year.

The college, which is the only private school for young drug abusers, has sought the use of the vacant New Territories Heung Yee Kuk Southern District Secondary School in Mui Wo since December 2006 to meet increasing demand for its services.

The application faces strong opposition from residents, despite government support for the proposal.
