Sporting spirit on display

I took part in three events - 800 metres, 400m and long jump - at our school's Sports Day.

Although I did not win any medals, I made a lot of friends.

The heats were held on the first day so it wasn't very exciting. But the second day was totally different. Everybody, including the athletes, audience and the cheering teams, showed great enthusiasm.

The cheering teams supported their athletes wholeheartedly by shouting slogans and waving banners.

As for me, the most unforgettable event was the teacher-student race in which an overweight boy took part. He was still running when all the others had finished the race, but he never gave up.

The other runners encouraged him and he was happy to complete the race.

I was moved by that wonderful display of sporting spirit.

I think the Sports Day is an excellent activity for students to relax outside the classroom.

I enjoyed the competition very much and am looking forward to next year's event.

Life term is best

I'm writing to express my views on the death penalty, which has been criticised by the human rights group Amnesty International.

The mainland, for example, executes thousands of people every year, according to news reports.

I think the death penalty should be abolished. Even a murderer couldn't get a worse punishment than life imprisonment because he loses his freedom forever.

Social workers can talk to prisoners on 'death row' and help them lead a new life. Maybe they can contribute to society even from jail.

Kindness works

Many parents punish their children, but do not praise them often enough.

If parents praise their children and give them a small gift when they do well, their relationship will improve.

If parents always scold their children, the children will be angry.

Parents should be kind to their children and children should show they care about their family.

Obey school rules

It is important for students to follow school rules.

There are limits to their freedom. They cannot expect to be unruly and get away with it. If they break the rules, they should be punished by their teachers.

Learning to obey school rules can help us become law-abiding citizens. It's not too late to correct your bad behaviour.

Up-to-date news

Hong Kong has lots of newspapers. A few of them are free and you can get them at MTR stations. These tabloids contain less news and more advertisements.

Then there are newspapers that cost you a few dollars. They still have many ads but there are more reports covering a wide range of subjects. Newspapers have always played an important role in our lives. They keep us up to date on what's happening around the world.

I hope this special relationship will continue.
