Get a taste of the sweet life - miracle berries that take away those bitter edges

The share market may appear to be on the right track, but we all know the actual economy still hasn't caught up with that trend. These are sour times, but luckily some people are still working at spreading a bit of sweetness around town.

Just this week LoDown was given a chance to taste so-called 'miracle berries' imported by NecesCity.com, a daily lifestyle e-newsletter for men. The invitation claimed that the miracle berries, which come from West Africa, had the ability to temporarily numb one's taste buds for sourness and bitterness. No matter what you ate after the miracle berries, everything would taste sweet.

We took the opportunity to sample a few of the bright red, frozen miracle berries. They didn't taste out of the ordinary; neither particularly sweet nor sour.

After eating the berries we took up the challenge to put anything that was extremely sour or bitter into our mouths - lemon, grapefruit, lime, pickle and even vinegar. The result was just as the invitation claimed.

Everything became sweet, as if all the food had been soaked in a bowl of syrup for days. And for a minute we thought we were drinking syrup when we tasted the vinegar.

These berries aren't cheap - they are available at HK$100 for four pieces, HK$200 for 10 pieces - and can be purchased only through the website.

NecesCity.com's business development director, Henning Voss, said that importing the berries was not easy, mainly because they had to be frozen and shipped with dry ice - otherwise they would rot three days after harvest.

Getting through Hong Kong's customs was also tough at the beginning. Voss said the use of the word 'miracle' in the name led to customs wondering whether the berries were some kind of drug.
