Bid to end doubt over judiciary

Representatives of the Law Society, the Bar Association and both sides of the political spectrum taking part in RTHK's City Forum yesterday urged people to stop speculating over Chief Justice Andrew Li Kwok-nang's decision to retire early, and to support the search for the next head of the judiciary.

Close contest in by-election

Lai Fan-fong won a seat on the Kwai Tsing District Council in a by-election. Lai garnered 1,451 votes, while rivals Rayman Chow Wai-hung and Li Chi-fai received 1,356 and 1,099 votes, respectively. The seat was formerly held by Leung Kwong-cheong, who was found guilty of fraud this year.

Pay-cut row 'harmed' ties

The relationship between the Hospital Authority and doctors was 'deeply harmed' when the authority threatened to sack doctors who refused to sign a pay-cut consent form, Public Doctors' Association president Dr Ho Pak-leung said. In an interview with Commercial Radio, he said long hours of work stressed many doctors.

Tsang urged to create jobs

The Federation of Trade Unions has urged Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen to introduce laws on maximum working hours and unveil plans to create jobs for low-skilled workers in the policy address next month. Federation vice-president Chan Yuen-han said introducing maximum working hours would create thousands of extra jobs.
