Funding for children

A Hong Kong-based company is hoping to work with a local welfare group to help underprivileged children in the city.

Direct sales company QuestNet has set aside US$10,000 to sponsor 11 children from low-income families over the next two years.

It is looking for a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) to come up with detailed plans on who the beneficiaries will be and how to help them with their education, healthcare, extra-curricular activities and leadership development.

QuestNet said the recipients should meet certain requirements. They should be 10 years old or younger and permanent Hong Kong residents. They should also be living below the poverty line, which means poor housing, inadequate nutrition, being out of school or having a big family.

The Hong Kong project is an extension of an international sponsorship scheme run by QuestNet. It is already helping 110 children in 10 countries, where the programme is jointly organised with World Vision International.

The company is planning to launch a similar scheme on the mainland. It has said it would like to team up with a small-scale welfare group in Hong Kong which receives little financial support from the government or the community.

QuestNet executive chairperson Donna Imson said they wanted to help children who have limited access to education and opportunities for personal development.

'Our objective is to ensure the benefits of the sponsorship will continue long after the programme has ended in two years,' she said.

Local NGOs who wish to join the scheme should submit a three-page proposal about their plans for the children they want to help. The deadline for submissions is November 30.
