Are Porsches changing from chick-magnet sports cars to family-friendly suburban wagons? That appeared to be the case on Friday when the German carmaker unveiled its four-door Panamera saloon at a lavish event at the Grand Hyatt, complete with a laser show.

But everything else about the event suggested family-of-four practicality over fanciful speeding, including the baked crab snacks and mini hamburgers.

'I think we should get this one,' said one child as he clambered inside a Panamera 4S the moment the dry ice and models with fixed smiles cleared a path for him. No doubt that's exactly what Porsche executives wanted to hear.

How times are changing: five years ago it would have been the hot girlfriend who did such lobbying for a Porsche - and it would have been a two-seater.
