A supermarket chain has opened more than 10 outlets this year as its sales doubled since the economic downturn.

Kai Bo Food Supermarket had recorded a 100 per cent surge in sales year on year, said managing director Lam Hiu-ngai as the chain opened its 64th outlet yesterday.

Offering cheaper food than its competitors proved to be the winning factor as customers became more price-conscious since the meltdown, Lam said. 'Whether people are not earning a lot of money, they still have to eat,' he said.

'More customers are visiting our supermarkets.'

By buying food directly from producers, the chain was able to sell products at 20 per cent lower than other supermarkets, he said.

Rents and wages had decreased since the meltdown and it provided an opportunity for the chain to expand, he added.

The chain has opened 13 supermarkets since January, or more than one every month. It plans to open two to three branches each month in the near future.
