Wen urges openness over quake projects

Premier Wen Jiabao has called for greater transparency in rebuilding efforts across quakeravaged Sichuan province .

The premier, who last week made his eighth tour of the province since the quake, urged regional authorities to publish online the reconstruction blueprint for Beichuan county, the area hardest hit by the magnitude-8 earthquake on May 12 last year. It is being rebuilt in a new location.

In May, authorities from Shandong province , assigned the task of rebuilding Beichuan, released a blueprint for the new county.

'If it weren't a product of the wisdom of all architects in the country, the new county would become a target of public criticism,' the premier was quoted by China National Radio as saying yesterday.

In a 10-point instruction to building authorities, he called for better oversight over the use of donations in relief efforts by allowing scrutiny, particularly from donors.

'We will not only build a good Beichuan, but should also put to good use donations from Chinese people and people all over the world,' Wen said. The premier's comments came amid public dismay over irregularities found in relief fund distribution.
