Customs has seized 45kg of opium hidden in wooden carvings and drums in express cargoes bound from Thailand to the United States, the first discovery in Hong Kong of this mode of drug smuggling. Officers at the airport found the drug in two hauls, both from Chiang Mai and destined for California. The opium was estimated to be worth HK$11.7 million.
