If you are not one of the select few blessed with long legs, jumpsuits can be tricky to wear. Romper suits, on the other hand, might be the fashion saviour for petite girls. They share the same all-in-one concept as jumpsuits except that the bottoms are shorts rather than full-length trousers.

Rompers are a favourite of young celebrities, including Chloe Sevigny, who looks effortless in her Chlo?cut-out rompers.

I saw stylist Ka (right) at an exhibition opening wearing an all-black silk romper suit that is light and elegant, and appropriate for both the office and after-hours. I like the way she's added an amber green tube top underneath and accessorised with a crystal bib necklace and vibrant blue Chlo?triple chain bag. The colours pop and look trendy.

Fashionista Jade (far right) shows us how to make a summery suit autumn-appropriate. Her silk button down romper is worn on top of a navy blue tank top and black leggings to create more layers. The fabric is comfortable but not too flimsy, so you can wear it when it gets cooler. Wear it under a coat or trench for a stylish autumn look.

When it comes to romper suits, I recommend silk styles that are feminine and easy to wear - they're more versatile than cotton or denim pieces. Curvier girls should avoid sleeveless styles and accessorise with scarves or long necklaces to distract attention from fuller areas.

I love pairing a romper suit with an oversized jacket, whether it's a boyfriend blazer or a grungy shirt with slightly longer tails. Don't forget to add a pair of heels to the outfit. You can also wear a turtleneck long-sleeved top underneath and finish it off with leather boots for the winter.

I spotted an emerald silk romper by Rag & Bone (Lane Crawford, Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2155 8066) with three-quarter sleeves that's perfect for early autumn.

I also like the charcoal grey silk romper from French Connection (Shop 119, Pacific Place, tel: 2918 1760), with its button down front, side pockets and racer back - its cool but classic. Jade got her rompers at Initial (Shop A, G/F Style House, The Park Lane, 310 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2882 9044).
