Still beaming after three decades in the lighting business

When interior designers say 'let there be light', Tino Kwan Wing-kuen is often the first person they call.
The prolific lighting expert may not have the name recognition accorded to other design specialists, but he has received his share of awards and he has been in demand enough to work for 30 years.
The 59-year-old is celebrating his three-decade career with a book called 30 Light Years and an exhibition of the same name at the Pao Galleries in the Arts Centre, and held an opening cocktail party on Monday night.
'Thirty years are gone in a blink of an eye,' the director of TinoKwan Lighting Consultants said.
'I didn't realise it until one of my staff reminded me. To me, numbers are meaningless. Many people ask me, how many projects have I done? And I always tell them I have never counted. If I tell you we are on the 47th project right now, as I speak, number 48 and 49 might be coming up already.'
Lights may not be the most obvious element in any created environment, but Kwan's expertise has been applied in Macau casino hotels such as MGM, Sands Macau and Four Seasons Hotel.
'Lights create an atmosphere. We've learned that if it is not right, people are put off by the light and will leave a shop. We try to create layers with different lighting techniques so people won't lose focus on a product. The lights can actually help to bring their eyes from one product to another, making them want to see more.'
The Art Centre exhibition continues until tomorrow.
