SML

Markedly different from the Press Room Group's other establishments (The Pawn, The Press Room and its two cheese rooms in Hollywood Road and Star Street), which are cosy venues in historic, neighbourly locations, SML is a large, contemporary space in a mall. Despite the departure, it works well due to the hip decor, airy space and shared seating. There is a large, attractively decorated terrace that will be popular on cool days and breezy nights. The fare on offer is high-quality comfort food presented in a novel format, which the menu describes as 'Democracy now comes in 3 sizes': every dish comes in small, medium and large, hence the restaurant's name. This means diners can have enough to share or order individual portions just for themselves. Wine is available through the dispensing machines that line one wall - again you get to choose the size of serving - and there are cocktails by the glass and jug. Recommended dishes include the divine crispy pork belly, with red cabbage-apple coleslaw (HK$41/HK$76/HK$138, pictured right), the grilled prawns with chilli and garlic (HK$62/HK$114/HK$208) and the salmon tartare (HK$32/HK$59/HK$108, pictured below right) which is attractively presented and fun as diners have to mix all the ingredients together themselves. The desserts created by the Press Room Group's expert pastry chef, Emma Renfrew, include the lovely caramel profiteroles with butterscotch (HK$18/HK$34 HK$51) and the light and refreshing citrus panna cotta with pink grapefruit and orange slices (HK$20/HK$37/HK$55).
