The Motown Years (CD) Michael Jackson & Jackson 5

Before the Moonwalk, there was Motown. Innovator that he was, Michael Jackson was shaking things up even as a pre-teen.

Michael Jackson & Jackson 5: The Motown Years contains three discs celebrating the late megastar's first foray into solo singing. The Jackson 5 was formed by Joe Jackson, the boys' father who saw it as a way out of a deprived life in Gary, Indiana. Almost immediately, Michael stood out from his brothers, and became the lead singer on almost all of the band's songs. The collection opens with ABC, one of the band's most recognisable tunes. The upbeat 'doo-wop' quality is common on several of their better-known songs, making them dance-floor classics.

When people think of the Jackson 5, it is usually their danceable disco music that comes to mind. But these discs remind listeners of Jackson's power to move people. He may have been only 10 when the band recorded Who's Lovin' You, but his voice has the emotion of an older man who's loved and lost. Whether you're a fan, or have simply yet to discover why so many millions mourned Jackson's untimely death, this set is a crucial addition to your music collection.
