A top-level official of the Higher People's Court of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is being investigated for corruption.

Ou Shaoxuan, vice-president of the court, was placed under shuanggui - an internal party discipline mechanism - due to a graft investigation, a person close to the court said.

A staff member who answered the phone at the court's administrative office confirmed the news, but refused to give additional information, or his name.

'So far, we have still not received formal notice about Ou's case,' he said.

'You should wait and see reports from state media.'

Ou's personal details and job description have been removed from the court's official website, although his picture remains online.

Local media reported that Ou had once apologised at an internal meeting of the provincial judicial and prosecution system for the court's inefficiency.

He said the court handled only 20 per cent of long-term cases that were pending last year.

The person said Ou's demise involved local property developers.
