As make-up trends go, the autumn/winter  look is not for the faint hearted. In addition to sultry, smoky eyes, red lips and perfect skin, make-up artists are looking to the 1980s for inspiration, and bold splashes of colour are appearing on eyes, cheeks and lips for a look that will liven up the dull winter months.
Here, some of our favourite make-up artists share their thoughts on this season's look and the must-have products:

'This season we have an array of looks that span from the exuberance of the '80s to the complex sculpted perfection of the early '90s,' Bouchard says. The excess of the '80s are expressed through bold lips, and fuchsia, bright orange and glowing reds were seen everywhere on the runway this year. A sculpted face with diffused highlights and contours echoes the chic '90s look. 'Think of an airbrushed effect,' Bouchard says. And black eyes are back in the form of either hard smoky eyes or controlled black cr?me liner. Key A/W colour tones include black, brown, cork, pink, magenta, burgundy, red and cherry.

Bye bye, summer tan. 'Perfect, fair skin' is the way to go this season, according to Ghag, who suggests high-coverage foundations for flawless-looking skin. Rather than tossing out your bronzer, however, Ghag recommends using it for contouring - another autumn make-up trend. 'Apply the bronzer with a medium-sized fluffy brush, blending it into the sides of the forehead and in the contours of the cheeks,' she says. As for lips, red in every shade and texture is in style right now. She suggests skipping lip liner and instead dabbing on colour from your lipstick or gloss for a more modern look.

Taking inspiration from the smoky grey colours on the runway and within an urban setting, Tyen says that smoky eyes will be a big hit this winter. During the day, emphasise either the eyes or the lips, and strong eyes should be paired with nude or natural lips. An evening look, however, can allow for bold lipstick to go with smoky eyes. A smooth complexion is also ideal. 'To me, the most important thing is to boast a perfectly uniform complexion,' Tyen says. 'To achieve the best and most natural result, place some foundation in the palm of your hand and heat it up by rubbing with your finger.' For those who prefer a bare minimum when it comes to make-up, Tyen's everyday make-up recommendation includes Diorskin Nude for a natural complexion, and black mascara with eyeliner and a touch of gloss.

Fun make-up can be a 'good antidote' for tough times, according to Nars. Party people will feel right at home with this season's trends, as the company founder looks to the edgy night-clubbing look for inspiration. 'There is a wide variety of colour,' he says. 'It's about whatever looks good on the girl.' Smooth, porcelain skin is essential for the colours to pop, and using black eye shadow as a canvas, you can create a dramatic eye by adding cobalt blues, deep greens, bright purples, reds, fuchsias or glitter. 'You want to play with make-up,' Nars says. 'Makeup is a great accessory.'
