Prebble is worthy favourite in Challenge
The Jockey Challenge oddsmakers were not giving anything away cheaply in opening markets last night, but Brett Prebble can justify his early favouritism at Sha Tin this afternoon.
Prebble is overdue for a win in the Jockey Challenge, with his only victory this season on October 1, and he has the ammunition to fend off his main rivals, Douglas Whyte and Matthew Chadwick.
To date this season, these three riders have probably held the lion's share of punters' money in the Challenge, but have won only three of the 12 contested.
Nevertheless, they have the edge in opportunities on paper again and Prebble was posted a 3.5 favourite ahead of 4.0 for Whyte and Chadwick, returning from his enforced lay off after falling on October 11.
The strategy for Prebble backers might be to wait until after race one to bet as the Australian doesn't have a ride there and victory for one of his main rivals will see his odds ease.
But he does have the hottest favourite of the day soon after in promising Taverner (race three), who should make short work of his opposition after an impressive debut.
If there is a value option, it is probably Derek Leung Ka-chun at 12.0 in opening markets.
He is without a real 'gift' horse, but has a number of solid chances throughout the afternoon.
