HK$8m drugs found in storage unit

Police have seized HK$8 million worth of cocaine and marijuana in a mini-storage unit in Kowloon.

Chief Superintendent John Ribeiro, of the narcotics bureau, said it was the first time drugs had been found at a mini-storage facility.

He said the storage units were easy to rent and had security services such as CCTV and electronic keys. An investigation of a drug syndicate revealed the storage unit in Wing Hong Street, Cheung Sha Wan, was being used to store drugs.

Two men were arrested at the site on Friday and officers seized 11 kilograms of cocaine and four kilograms of marijuana buds, with an estimated street value of HK$8.2 million.

The men are suspected members of an organised crime syndicate. The drugs are thought to have been smuggled in from South America.

Storages require customers to provide personal details but after they get the key and smart card they can pass them on to someone else.

The men were arrested for trafficking in dangerous drugs and will appear in Kowloon City Court tomorrow.
