St Teresa Secondary School

St Teresa Secondary School was honoured to have Reverend Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-Kiun perform a blessing ceremony for its new statue of St Teresa of Lisieux recently.

He also conducted an opening ceremony for a mosaic based on the seven days of Creation.

Zen blessed the statue, which he had given the school as a gift.

The 54-metre-long mosaic, named 'Genesis', was a joint effort involving more than 300 students. This mosaic reminds everyone of the love of God and the responsibilities of mankind on earth.

Zen said St Teresa adored Jesus. She taught us to have pure trust in our Heavenly Father. She also taught us to face the pains and sufferings in life bravely.

After the blessing ceremonies in the playground, the whole school moved into the hall, where the new committees of the Catholic Students' Association were asked by the cardinal to spread the word of God on campus.

The cardinal was then interviewed by Form Six student Mak Kit-yee.

Cardinal Zen said he admired his father and St Don Bosco when he was a teenager.

He said his father was a warm and fun gentleman, as well as an extremely devoted Catholic.

St Don Bosco was the founder the Salesian Society, which inspired Zen with the knowledge that love is always more important than punishment.

The cardinal went on to encourage the students to follow in the footsteps of St Teresa. He also emphasised the importance of reading and family values.

In the afternoon, school members attended mass at St Teresa's Church.

During the mass, the 'Parable of the Ten Virgins' was read.

School supervisor Reverend Francis Lau encouraged students to learn from the five wise virgins who brought flasks of oil with their lamps before they went to meet their bridegrooms.

Lau said the message of the story was that you should always be prepared.

Everybody at St Teresa Secondary School said they were thankful for such a fruitful day of celebrations. Students and staff said they were better equipped for challenges that were likely to come up in the new academic year.

Shun Lee Catholic Secondary

The Shun Lee Catholic Secondary School's athletics meeting at Hammer Hill Sports Ground had a special significance this year.

The meeting was extra exciting because our school is participating in the School Torch Relay Programme, organised as part of the East Asian Games to be held in Hong Kong next month.

Each school taking part in the programme has been presented with a torch, and torch relay activities are being staged during school athletic meetings.

Other activities have also been organised to foster the Asian Games spirit.

It was a rare opportunity for students and teachers to be part of an activity like this.

While only a few students and teachers actually got to carry a torch, the other students cheered the torchbearers on. Everybody had a lot of fun on the day.

Tri-Chess Tournament

The first Hong Kong Tri-Chess Tournament was held in the school hall of Kowloon Technical School recently.

More than 100 players from 29 schools took part in the tournament for the secondary school section.

In the primary school section, 11 schools and 32 players competed.

The tournament included Chinese chess, international chess and Go, all of which students in Hong Kong are familiar with.

This was the first time Hong Kong has had a chess tournament that included three types of chess. This helped students to think in different dimensions. For example, we saw a Chinese chess player analysing a Go position.

The shield of honour was sponsored by Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai.

The Dr Catherine F Woo Memorial Public School team won the primary division. Diocesan Boy's School Primary and Baptist LMC Primary School were the runners-up.

The Wah Yan College, Kowloon team won the secondary division. Wah Yan College, Hong Kong came second, and King's College and South Island School shared third place.

Several masters in Chinese chess, international chess and Go were present and played demonstration games.

They also offered advice on their games and tips for winning.
