Jockey Club delight over Valley turnover
Officials at the Jockey Club were pleasantly surprised, to say the least, as the meeting returned the best turnover figures for the season to date and a record Jockey Challenge investment to boot.
With almost HK$970 million in pari-mutuel investments, the club was up by a sizeable HK$53 million, compared with the weekend Valley meeting on October 19 last year, which staged one more race, but wait, there's even more good news.
Jockey Challenge betting was a whopping HK$9 million in round terms on the fixture, some three times the comparison with the same card a year ago, and the fixed-odds channel continues to grow.
'The crowd was also up, the beer garden was full and our restaurants were sold out,' said chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges. 'The indications are good right now.'
And all on what appeared a fairly average meeting. Engelbrecht-Bresges was also very happy with the HK$44 million turnover on the four-race Victoria Derby meeting simulcast on Saturday, about HK$4 million more than the club handled on five races on Cox Plate day.
'With customers having a form reference after seeing some of the horses the week before on the Cox Plate simulcast, this was reflected in the figures,' he said.
'This looks an area we need to look at more closely for our other simulcasts and hopefully that will have a roll-on effect to the simulcast of Melbourne Cup day on Tuesday.'
