Two die as sand barge hits ferry

At least two people were killed and eight injured when a catamaran from the China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui collided with a vessel last night in a Guangzhou port.

A spokesman from the Marine Department said both those killed were expatriates and that all the injured were admitted to hospitals.

The accident happened when a catamaran from Chu Kong Passenger Transport, which was carrying 75 passengers and nine crew members, collided with a barge carrying sand at about 7.45pm. They collided at a spot about five minutes from Lian Hua Shan port in Panyu .

A conveyor belt on the front of the barge pierced the ferry.

The spokesman said no one was missing, and the damaged ferry and barge were towed into the port.

A staff member at the Shilou Town People's Hospital told Cable TV that a Dutch passenger had been killed in the accident. Other passengers were taken to, or had got themselves to, other local hospitals, including the Clifford Hospital in Panyu, which was well known to Hongkongers, he said.
