Hanging out with his neighbour and good friend Tiger Woods in suburban Orlando, a short drive from Disney World, in Florida, Mark O'Meara may seem like a typical, all-American guy.

Yet unlike some of his contemporaries, the two-time major champion has rarely thought twice about travelling to play in unfamiliar and faraway places.

In fact, he seems to thrive in new surroundings, enjoying many of his most memorable golfing moments a long way from home - including some on Asian soil.

'I realised at an early stage that golf was a really global game,' O'Meara said. 'I wanted to win in America, but felt it was also important to see different lifestyles, see different cultures in different countries. So to finally make my debut in the UBS Hong Kong Open is very special.'

In the 11 years since his career- defining 1998 season, when he claimed two major titles and won the Cisco World Matchplay Championship, the experiences that stand out for O'Meara have tended to come in faraway destinations.

In 1999, he partnered Woods in the United States team to win the World Cup of Golf in Malaysia and then he broke a long victory-drought at the 2004 Dubai Desert Classic.
