Wealthy residents snap up the truffles - for the benefit of charities

A group of local bankers might get to enjoy this year's biggest white truffle from Alba, Italy, but two other big truffles have also arrived in town after other prominent Hongkongers bought them via satellite link-up at an annual auction on Sunday night. Tonight, wealth manager and wine connoisseur Shirley Chiu will have to come up with something robust to match her 268-gram lump of prized truffle, for which she paid HK$110,000, at a dinner at the Grand Hyatt's Italian restaurant, Grissini. Then, on Monday, Crown Worldwide Group's Jim Thompson will host a group lunch at Grissini for his 404 grams of white gold after shelling out HK$160,000 for it. Lest you think they're just a couple of rich show-offs, the money was donated to Mother's Choice and the Changing Young Lives Foundation.
