Dedicated birdwatchers, including four-and-a-half-year-old Diana Wong (left), trained their binoculars on the skies above Mai Po Nature Reserve yesterday.

The fun spotters give way to watchers with a more serious purpose next weekend, when a group of fund-raisers take to the marshes.

Sixteen teams will be keeping their eyes peeled during the Big Bird Race, attempting to tot up the highest tally of different species spotted over two days.

The charity event is aimed at raising cash for the Worldwide Fund for Nature's Hong Kong Education programme and to meet the management expenses at the reserve in the New Territories.
