What to know when ordering custom-made jewellery

Do: Have ideas about what to look for. Start with a special stone and build from there. Know what kind of stone suits you best.

Be familiar with the 'four Cs' - cut, colour, clarity and carat. The higher the readings, the rarer a stone will be.

Choose stones with certificates issued by the Gemological Institute of America or relevant authorities from Europe and America.

Go to a jeweller you know and trust and have confidence in the skills of the people who are working on your piece.

Let the terminology confuse you. Do some research online beforehand and, when in doubt, ask.

Design anything too extreme as this will affect the presentation of the stones and the end result might not be as you expected.
