Cathay to make 53 redundant

Fifty-three employees in Cathay Pacific Airways' information management department will be made redundant in the coming months. A company spokesman said most of them had strengths and backgrounds that did not match the skills and backgrounds needed as part of a restructuring programme. They will receive redundancy packages exceeding those required by law, Cathay said.

Woman, child hurt in accident

A woman, 30, and an 18-month-old boy were injured in a five-vehicle accident in San Po Kong yesterday. A car reversing in King Fuk Street hit two vans before crossing into the opposite lane, mounting a pavement and knocking down the woman and child. It also hit a parked truck and finally collided head-on with another car. The woman is in serious condition, but the boy was discharged.

Swine flu patient, 76, critical

A 76-year-old patient in North District Hospital was in a critical condition with swine flu yesterday. The man, who suffers from hypertension and has a chronic condition that obstructs his airways, developed flu symptoms on October 30 when he went to the hospital. He was prescribed Tamiflu and antibiotics. He became critical yesterday morning and was put on a ventilation machine.
