Overnight search for missing hiker - found asleep at home

A hiker reported missing after failing to make a rendezvous with friends on Saturday was found safe at home yesterday. He had set out with two friends on the Lantau Island hike from Shek Pik to Tai O at about 11am. But in the middle of the hike he told his friends he wanted to take a different route and would meet them at Tai O at 6pm. When he did not show up, the friends called police and an overnight search by firemen, police and the Government Flying Service ensued. At about 7am yesterday, firemen phoned the man and found him sleeping at home.

Extra hospital beds for flu peak

Public hospitals could offer 80 extra intensive care beds during the winter flu peak, Hospital Authority chief executive Shane Solomon said. He urged people in high-risk groups to be vaccinated against swine flu. Europe and North America were experiencing a second wave of swine flu infections, he said, but he was not worried about a large outbreak occurring in Hong Kong.

Two bodies found

An 89-year-old man was found unconscious in a swimming pool in Kent Road, Kowloon Tong, at about 4pm. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene. In a separate incident, the body of a male in his 20s was found on a beach at Kuk Po in Bride's Pool Road, Sha Tau Kok, at about 10.40am.

Drunk passenger attacks cabbie

A 60-year-old taxi driver was attacked by a drunk passenger, 59, at the junction of Salisbury and Nathan roads, Tsim Sha Tsui, at about 12.45am. The attacker was arrested and the victim treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Couple assaulted in restaurant

A man, 43, and woman, 34, were attacked by two men in their 30s while dining at a restaurant in Portland Street, Mong Kok, at about 5.15am. The pair were taken to Kwong Wah Hospital.

Man hurt in fall from platform

A 63-year-old man was injured when he fell from a Light Rail platform at Hong Lok Road station on Castle Peak Road, Yuen Long, at about noon. He was taken to Pok Hoi Hospital.
