Art Mumby lives with his family in a grand Victorian mansion called Larklight. The Mumbys are a typical middle-class British family living in the second half of the 19th century.

The red, white and blue colours of the British Empire covered much of the globe at that time. British explorers had also claimed a great deal of Outer Space for Good Queen Victoria.

Philip Reeve's Mothstorm uses this as the background and sets the Mumby home in orbit around the moon. The Mumby family - Mum, Dad, Art and his sister Myrtle - have to cope with all sorts of problems that families back on earth can't even imagine.

This story of space exploration in a fictitious world was created by Reeve for the inventive and thrilling Larklight series.

It is Christmas at Larklight, and the Mumbys are getting ready to enjoy the festive season. But worrying news arrives about a sinister unidentified cloud on the horizon. What is it and why is it heading straight for Larklight?

The Mumbys also receive a message from friends who are stranded on the planet Uranus. The Reverend Cruet and his daughter Charity have been doing some missionary work on the planet, but things have gone very wrong.

The brave Mumbys find themselves in the middle of an alien invasion involving giant moths and a very nasty, power-crazy villain with plans to take over the entire solar system.
