Office gets 18,000 complaints about water seepage
A joint office that the government set up in mid-2006 to handle water seepage problems received 18,196 seepage complaints in the first 10 months of this year. Secretary for Development Carrie Lam told the Legislative Council yesterday the figure compared with 17,405 in 2007 and 21,717 last year. She said most of the complaints involved residential buildings. The joint office provides a 'one-stop' service to the public and co-ordinates the work of the Food and Environmental Hygiene, Buildings and Water Supplies departments on water seepage.
Disposers should pay something towards electronics recycling
People disposing of electronic waste had a duty to contribute to transport and recycling fees under producer responsibility schemes, the Hong Kong Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Alliance said. The suggestion came after the alliance visited recycling plants in Japan from November 17 to 20 to learn about the roles of manufacturers, local government and retailers in recycling. The government should invest in, operate and monitor recycling centres, the group said.
Baby to undergo autopsy
An autopsy will be carried out after a seven-month-old Tsuen Wan girl was found unconscious yesterday in bed and died later in hospital. The baby, surnamed Chan, was found by her 19-year-old mother in a Ma Kok Street flat at about 8.40am. She was taken to Yan Chai Hospital, where she was declared dead. Police said initial investigation found nothing suspicious.
Boys arrested for assault, robbery
Three 15-year-old boys, two of whom are Form Three pupils, were arrested after a 38-year-old man was pushed into an alley, assaulted and robbed of a wallet containing HK$400 in Tai Tong Road, Yuen Long, at about 11.50pm on Tuesday. Officers recovered the money and wallet at the scene. The victim was treated at Pok Oi Hospital. Last night police were still looking for a teenage boy in connection with the incident.
Seven arrested in recycling raids
Seven people were arrested and a large quantity of underground power cable, road signs and drain covers seized when police raided a number of recycling parks and workshops in Tin Shui Wai, Sheung Shui and Lok Ma Chau.
