Choosing gifts for close friends and family is easy enough. Choosing a gift for a competitor in the same line of work, however, is a different matter altogether. Hotel: Four Seasons vs Mandarin Oriental

William Mackay, Four Seasons general manager

'After much deliberation, I have decided that I would like to offer Mr Schuermann an exclusive lifestyle membership at The Spa at Four Seasons, including use of our fitness centre, yoga and Pilates classes, and access to our swimming pools. Since Mr Schuermann is surrounded by the best British food in town (especially the steak and ale pie at The Chinnery, which is hard for anyone to resist) and will no doubt be tempted to sample it on a regular basis, we'd like to offer him a place to relax, wind down and work out.'

'I would like to invite William Mackay for a home-cooked meal at my flat, the reason being that I'm sure Mr Mackay spends a lot of time eating in the very best restaurants, but sometimes there is nothing better than a good, simple, home-cooked meal accompanied by an excellent bottle of wine (or two) and great conversation.'
