Michele Reis loves knitting. It's hard to believe a glamorous star has such an unglamorous hobby, but the actress proved it with two needles and some yarn on Wednesday at the launch of Save the Children's 'Knit One, Save One' campaign at Festival Walk.

The charity aims to raise awareness of the high child mortality rate in developing countries such as Nepal. As campaign ambassador, Reis is calling on people to buy its HK$100 knitting kit and use it to make hats, scarves or tiny tops for kids in developing countries. She demonstrated her needlework at the afternoon event.

'Well, I haven't knitted for a while so my knitting skills are a bit rusty,' said Reis (right) as she clumsily finished the last few stitches on a hat. 'I just have to do it slowly, stitch by stitch.'

She said she's more handy with scarves. In fact, Reis said she had already made two for her husband, Julian Hui Chun-hang, as Valentine's Day gifts. 'The first one I made had our initials, J and M, and the second one was knitted with two bears - one white and one black. Of course, the white one resembled me. He hasn't worn it often but I think he must like it because he put them in a nice place in our house.'

The campaign continues until December 31. A free knitting workshop will be hosted every weekend. For details, go to www.savethechildren.hk/everyone/cht/index.php/
